Inpatient memory and emotional wellness care

When your loved one is suffering from sudden changes in their mental or physical condition, it can threaten their well-being.

This is especially true when your loved one:

  • Has trouble keeping up with daily medications and takes either too much (overdosing) or too little (underdosing)
  • Has difficulty performing activities of daily living, such as eating and bathing
  • Displays behaviors that put you or others at risk
  • Has difficulty communicating their thoughts and needs
  • Is not able to control their feelings and emotions

The goal of inpatient geriatric psychiatric care is to help older adults experience fewer disruptive behaviors and slow their rate of mental decline.

Why choose us?

MultiCare’s Geriatric Inpatient Psychiatric Unit is located at MultiCare Auburn Medical Center, and specializes in memory care and emotional wellness.

Our 38-bed inpatient unit is unique to our area. Here we provide compassionate care and rehabilitation to older adults experiencing a range of mental health conditions. Two separate units — an emotional wellness unit for adults 50 and older, and a memory wellness unit for adults age 60 and over — allow us to offer specialized treatment for dementia and for treatment of other disorders such as schizophrenia, depression and anxiety.  Our hospital setting also allows us to provide any medical support they need.

Working side by side with you and your family, our experienced team monitors your loved one’s progress and adjust treatment plans to meet their changing needs.

Our team includes:

  • Geriatric psychiatrists
  • Licensed social workers
  • Psychiatric nurses
  • Advance practice nurses
  • Rehabilitation therapists
  • Occupational therapists
  • Creative arts therapists

How we help

Your loved one’s treatment program may include:

  • Counseling: Therapy with one of our state-certified mental health counselors helps your loved one cope with depression, anxiety and other mental health challenges.
  • Medical care: As part of our integrated approach to care, physicians work side by side with mental health specialists to deliver seamless care for medical conditions. Learn more about our integrated services.
  • Medication management: Because many of our patients are on complex medication programs, we offer round-the-clock medication management. This allows us to adjust their medications as needed and prevent medication-related complications.
  • Personalized rehabilitation: From speech therapy to help with daily activities, such as eating and getting dressed, our therapists deliver personalized care to help your loved one maintain as much independence as possible.
  • Therapeutic group activities: An active daily schedule of therapeutic group activities, including art, music and movement therapy, helps keep your loved one’s mind engaged.

Keeping families involved

Regular contact with familiar faces is also an important part of your loved one’s care. In person visits are limited due to COVID restrictions, but video visits are also offered.

When your loved one is well enough to return home, we provide ongoing follow-up care through our Older Adult Services program.
