Residency benefits

Salary

The present salary range is revised annually to maintain equity with the University of Washington Residency programs:

  • R1 = $69,584
  • R2 = $71,990
  • R3 = $74,637

Health insurance

A comprehensive medical and dental insurance plan, as well as group life and disability insurance, is provided for residents and their dependents for no cost.

Vacation and sick time

There are three weeks (17 days) of paid vacation in each year of residency. Vacation days do not roll over to the next year.

Residents are provided 12 sick days per year that roll over to the following year if not used.

Continuing medical education

Educational leave, along with financial support for continuing medical education, is also provided:

  • R-1s have three days of CME
  • R-2s and R-3s have five days of CME

Residents may use CME funds of up to $1,000 for a one-time purchase of an electronic device. In addition, residents are encouraged to become involved with organized medical societies. CME funds may be used to cover membership dues.

Certifications

EPFM recognizes the importance of providing residents with the tools necessary to manage a wide variety of emergencies. Certifications offered and paid for by MultiCare include ACLS, ALSO, BLS, NRP and PALS.

ATLS and STABLE are offered in the region; registration fees would come out of a resident’s CME allowance.

Meals

Funds for meals are provided to residents while assigned to in-house/hospital duty for residency-related responsibilities. You will receive a predetermined amount two times per year, and use is at your discretion.

Housing

Residents are responsible for their own housing, but call/sleep rooms are available while in the hospital. Apartments and houses are available in a variety of settings and price ranges within a reasonable distance from the hospital and clinic.

We recommend living within 20 minutes of the hospital to ensure timely response, especially for deliveries. If your commute is longer, sleep rooms are available at the hospital so you can stay close and manage labor progress effectively. When Residents are on back-up, they are responsible to stay within a reasonable distance from the hospital, and they will be expected to start their shift within 1 hour of being called in.

Since several training facilities are used in the Pierce County area, having a vehicle for transportation is a necessity.

Malpractice coverage

Professional liability insurance (occurrence type, with no need to purchase “tail” coverage) is provided for all residents through MultiCare Health System.

Additional amenities

Three white clinic coats are provided for each resident. Parking is also provided.
