Advanced Upper Extremity Course: Skill Building and Mentoring for Pediatric & Adult Therapists in NDT – taught by Kim Barthel
Credits: 12 continuing education hours (1.2 CEUs) clock hours available upon request
Audience: PT, OT, & SLPs who work with individuals’ post-stroke and/or brain injury
Or
PT, OT, & SLPs who work with children with cerebral palsy or other neuromuscular disorders
Level: Intermediate to advanced
Therapists working with children who have neurological challenges will benefit from this intensive 12-hour On-Demand learning experience. Through the lens of the NDT Contemporary Practice Model, clinicians will expand their understanding of theory, kinesiology, typical development, clinical reasoning, and intervention strategies. Designed to support NDT practitioners at the highest level, content will be on the development of participation in upper extremity function, grasp, and manipulation in human occupations across diverse contexts.
Objectives:
Participants will be able to:
- Develop an appreciation for the neurobiology of upper extremity function.
- Identify significant anatomical, kinesiological and develop mental characteristics of the spine, rib cage, shoulder girdle complex and upper extremities.
- Evaluate typical motions of the upper extremity.
- Observe, analyze and evaluate effective and ineffective posture and movement and its impact on a client’s functional abilities/limitations as it relates to upper extremity function.
- Analyze atypical movement patterns and determine impairments that interfere with upper extremity function.
- Construct effective treatment strategies that address the client/patient’s primary impairments interfering with efficient use of the upper extremity during functional activities.
- Design options for handling skills during treatment practicum to optimize the individual’s function and enhance his/her ability to achieve client/patient specific goals.
