TACOMA, Wash. — Eight MultiCare Health System hospitals have been recognized by the American Heart Association for their commitment to providing high-quality stroke care.

The awards are part of the association’s Get With The Guidelines® program, which helps hospitals align stroke care with the latest research and evidence-based medical practices. Hospitals qualify by consistently demonstrating excellence in stroke treatment and patient outcomes.

“Get With The Guidelines makes it easier for our teams to put proven knowledge and guidelines to work on a daily basis, which studies show can improve patient recovery,” said Karissa LaClair, associate vice president of neuroscience. “These awards reflect MultiCare’s deep commitment to delivering the highest-quality stroke care for our patients across our entire health system.”

Stroke is the fifth-leading cause of death and a major cause of long-term disability in the United States. A stroke occurs when a blood vessel supplying oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked or bursts. Without oxygen-rich blood, brain cells begin to die. Early detection and treatment are critical to improving survival, reducing disability and accelerating recovery times.
