Bone Density Scan (DEXA)

Bone densitometry (DEXA or DXA) is a type of medical imaging that measures bone mineral density. If your bones are not very dense, they can become brittle and weak, making them more likely to break. Osteoporosis, genetics or treatments for some chronic diseases can cause bone loss.

DEXA is used to diagnose osteoporosis, a condition which causes more than 8.9 million fractures annually, according to the International Osteoporosis Foundation. This test can also track the effects of treatments that make bones stronger and determine if someone is at risk of breaking bones.

Who should get DEXA testing?

DEXA testing is strongly recommended for postmenopausal women as well as men with clinical conditions associated with bone loss. It is also strongly recommended for those who:

  • Have estrogen deficiencies
  • Have a personal or maternal history of hip fracture
  • Use tobacco
  • Live a sedentary lifestyle
  • Consume alcohol excessively
  • Have a low calcium intake
  • Are thin, small boned and weigh less than 125 pounds
  • Use medications that are known to cause bone loss
  • Have engaged in long-term steroid use
  • Have Type 1 diabetes, liver disease or kidney disease
  • Have a family history of osteoporosis
  • Have a thyroid condition, such as hyperthyroidism
  • Have experienced a fracture after mild trauma
  • Have X-ray evidence of vertebral fracture or other signs of osteoporosis

What to expect

A DEXA test most commonly examines the bones in the hips and lower spine. During this painless imaging procedure, you will lie down on a padded examining table as part of the DEXA machine moves over your body. You will need to lie still during this time. The test takes approximately 15-20 minutes.

How to prepare

  • Wear comfortable clothing. Please avoid wearing clothing with metal buttons or zippers. A loose-fitting outfit with an elastic waistband is best. You will need to remove all metal from around the waist prior to your exam.
  • Consult with staff about previous testing. Please inform staff at the time of scheduling if you have had recent barium studies, nuclear medicine studies, or studies involving IV or oral contrast. These studies may affect the results of the DEXA test.
  • Avoid calcium supplements 24 hours before your examination. Calcium can be found in multivitamins and antacids. Taking these supplements before your test can lead to inaccurate results. It’s OK to eat dairy products.
  • Arrange child care and arrive early. For the safety of you and your children, please do not bring them to your appointment. If you are unable to arrange child care, please reschedule your appointment. Arrive 10-15 minutes early to fill out paperwork.

After your exam

A radiologist, a physician who specializes in interpreting medical imaging, will analyze the results and send a report to your health care provider. You can also view your results in MyChart once they are available.
