Interventional Pulmonology

Advanced diagnosis and treatment of lung conditions

MultiCare is dedicated to leading-edge approaches to care. Interventional pulmonology, a newer field of medicine, allows doctors to diagnose and treat lung and breathing problems using advanced techniques and technologies that don’t require surgery. Interventional pulmonology allows physicians to:

  • Expand airways that are too narrow to allow air through
  • Find and treat tumors, bleeding, inflammation and other lung problems
  • Open blocked airways

Our interventional pulmonologists work closely with a multidisciplinary team that includes thoracic surgeons, cancer (oncology) specialists and other providers who work together to treat you, all while minimizing the impact on your everyday life.

Conditions we treat

MultiCare provides diagnosis and treatment of respiratory disorders, including:

  • Lung cancer
  • Lung nodules and masses
  • Central airway obstruction
    • Malignant/cancerous
    • Non-malignant/non-cancerous
  • Pleural effusions
  • Pneumothorax
  • End-stage severe COPD/emphysema

Services we provide

Our expert providers perform a wide range of advanced procedures to accurately diagnose and treat lung problems. Our team will work with you to create a treatment plan that will help start you on the road to recovery.

Therapeutic bronchoscopy

When you have breathing difficulties, we can help provide relief using advanced techniques and state-of-the-art equipment, including:

  • Ablation techniques
  • Argon plasma coagulation (APC)
  • Balloon bronchoplasty
  • Bronchoscopic lung volume reduction (BLVR) — valves for COPD treatment
  • Cryotherapy
  • Electrocautery
  • Mechanical debulking
  • Percutaneous tracheostomy
  • Photodynamic therapy (PDT)
  • Pleurodesis
  • Stenting — silicone, metallic and hybrid/covered metallic
  • Thoracoscopy

Advanced diagnostic robotic bronchoscopy

Early-stage diagnosis of lung cancer can be difficult, but we offer a minimally invasive robotic-assisted approach to help diagnose the disease sooner and with greater accuracy.

Using an ultra-thin catheter that allows navigation far into the lung, robotic-assisted bronchoscopy enables physicians to obtain tissue samples from hard-to-reach areas.

In addition to robotic-assisted bronchoscopy, we utilize the following diagnostic procedures:

  • Autofluorescence and narrow-band imaging
  • Linear and radial endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS)

Detecting and treating lung cancer in its earliest stage

Donna Pesacreta wasn’t expecting to be screened for lung cancer at her annual checkup. But as part of the appointment her doctor inquired about Pesacreta’s smoking history. Pesacreta quit smoking 13 years ago, but because she smoked a pack a day for more than 25 years, she was eligible for lung cancer screening. After a low-dose CT scan revealed a suspicious spot on Pesacreta’s lungs, she was referred to a MultiCare interventional pulmonologist for a biopsy.
