Overview

Goals and objectives

The goal of MultiCare’s Pacific Northwest Hip & Knee Adult Reconstruction Fellowship is to provide the Fellow with the training and education to develop and enhance operative technique and clinical skills in orthopedic reconstructive surgery of the hip and knee.

Our objective is to offer the Fellow comprehensive surgical experience in primary, complex primary, and revision total hip and knee reconstructive surgery. This includes:

  • Partial knee replacement
  • Complex deformity knee replacement
  • Revision knee replacement
  • Comprehensive exposures for hip replacement including minimally invasive techniques for both direct anterior and modified posterior approaches
  • Extensile/osteotomy exposures for hip revisions
  • Endoprosthetic reconstruction of the hip and knee
  • Management of infected total hip and total knee replacements
  • Periprosthetic fractures of the hip and knee

In addition, the Fellow will gain expertise utilizing digital tools and robotic assistance platforms while performing reconstructive surgery

Clinical and Operative Experience

Fellows will gain clinical and operative experience in MultiCare facilities in Tacoma, Washington. This primarily involves MultiCare Allenmore Hospital, the designated surgery center for MultiCare Orthopedics & Sports Medicine’s Joint Replacement program. Learn more about MultiCare’s Joint Replacement Program.

Fellows rotation schedule will be divided into four, three-month blocks where they will be paired directly with one of the two joint reconstruction surgeons. The weekly schedule will consist of three days in the operating room and two days in clinic. Surgical experience will exceed 500 cases over the course of the year and will be very broad.

The experience will be provided under the supervision of Program Director Zach Adler, MD, and Associate Director Robert Tamurian, MD.

Research

The Fellow is highly encouraged to engage in research throughout the Fellowship. Research is conducted in collaboration with the MultiCare Institute for Research & Innovation as the faculty participate in clinical trials and have access to database information for retrospective clinical studies pertaining to all aspects of adult reconstruction.

All fellows will be asked to present and submit at least one publishable quality research project at the completion of the fellowship.

Requirements

All Fellows will, by the completion of their fellowship, be highly competent and able to:

  • Evaluate, diagnose, and treat degenerative conditions of the hip and knee (both surgically and non-surgically)
  • Workup and treat painful or failed joint replacements of the hip and knee
  • Successfully diagnose and  manage infections and fractures around total hip and total knee replacements
  • Demonstrate advanced knowledge of the surgical anatomy and exposures around the hip and knee

Salary, Vacation, and Conferences

Fellows are commensurate as a PGY-6 with health and dental insurance for the fellow and his/her family and other standard benefits for MultiCare. Malpractice insurance is provided by MultiCare on an occurrence basis.

In addition, the fellow will be eligible for two weeks of vacation, one week of CME with a CME stipend, and one week of practice search.
