Colon & Rectal Surgery

Our colon and rectal surgery team at MultiCare Cancer Institute – Allenmore provides expert surgical care for conditions of the colon and rectum, including colorectal cancer and complex colorectal diseases.

Our surgeons work closely with medical oncologists, radiation oncologists and other specialists to ensure patients receive comprehensive, coordinated care — from diagnosis through treatment and follow-up.

  • Colon and rectal cancers
  • Diverticulitis
  • Hemorrhoids
  • Pelvic floor disorders
  • Inflammatory bowel disease, including Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis

  • Bowel (colon) resection
  • Hemorrhoid surgery
  • Pelvic floor reconstruction
  • Total colectomy

When appropriate, procedures may be performed using minimally invasive robotic-assisted surgery, which allows surgeons to operate through small incisions with enhanced precision and control. This approach may help reduce recovery time and limit impact on surrounding healthy tissue compared to open surgery.

Nationally accredited rectal cancer care

MultiCare has earned accreditation from the National Accreditation Program for Rectal Cancer (NAPRC), a quality program of the American College of Surgeons. Accreditation by the NAPRC is granted only to those programs that are committed to providing the best possible cancer care to patients with rectal cancer.

Cancer genetics

Cancer genetics services at MultiCare Cancer Institute – Allenmore help patients and families understand their inherited risk for cancer and how genetic information may guide screening, prevention and treatment decisions.

Our genetic counseling team partners closely with oncologists, surgeons, and other specialists to support personalized, informed care — whether patients are newly diagnosed, managing long‑term risk or concerned about family history.

  • Hereditary cancer risk assessment
  • Genetic counseling and testing, when appropriate
  • Guidance on cancer screening and prevention strategies
  • Support for patients and families with personal or family histories of cancer

  • Expect an hour-long appointment. Please plan additional time for parking and checking in.
  • You will meet with a geneticist or a genetic counselor
  • We will review personal and family history, review of medical records including any previous diagnoses of cancer, prior genetic test results (if completed), and new cancers or recurrences.
  • Our discussion will include chances of an inherited cancer predisposition, testing options, insurance authorization, possible results, and changes to current surveillance and/or treatment plan.
  • Can coordinate genetic testing with blood or saliva samples

  • Discuss new test results
  • Provide any new information about your condition
  • Discuss the implications of test results, including management and screening recommendations, as well as recommendations for other family members who may be at risk.
