MyChart Proxy Access

Help manage a family member’s health

MyChart proxy access allows a parent, legal guardian, family member or other caregiver to access a patient’s health record. To obtain authorized access, you must have your own MyChart account.

Access to medical records of children and teens is reserved for parents and legal guardians. The level of access (full or limited) is based on the age of the patient.

Full proxy access (ages 0-12)

A parent/guardian of a child between ages 0-12 has full access to their child’s health record via MyChart. This includes the ability to:

  • Schedule and manage appointments
  • Get test results
  • Request prescription refills
  • View after-visit summaries
  • Send secure messages to their child’s provider*
  • Pay bills online (if also the guarantor)

*Charges may apply.

Children 12 years and younger cannot have their own MyChart account. Their medical information will be linked to the proxy’s account.

Limited proxy access (ages 13-17)

Full proxy access automatically converts to limited access when a child turns 13 in Washington (14 in Idaho). This is due to state laws that protect a teen’s health information privacy and their right to seek certain confidential health care services without a parent/guardian’s consent.

Limited access to a teen’s health record does not include sensitive information. The proxy will be restricted from appointment scheduling, visit information, medications, test results, etc. Proxies who are guarantors can access billing features.

Limited access does include the ability of a parent/guardian to:

  • View immunization records
  • Send secure messages to their teen’s provider*
  • View insurance information
  • Pay bills online (if also the guarantor)
  • For a detailed list of features available to proxies with limited access, see detailed charts

*Charges may apply.

Teens can sign up for their own MyChart account at their clinic and must have their own email address to complete the process.

A parent or guardian may be granted full access to a teen’s account under certain circumstances, such as when a patient has severe cognitive disabilities or is undergoing treatment for a serious condition, or if the teen decides to grant full access using MyChart Sharing Hub. Ask your teen’s provider for details.

Proxy access ends on the patient’s 18th birthday, at which time they may add another adult proxy if needed.

Note to Idaho residents: Proxy access converts to limited access at age 14. A parent or guardian may request a copy of their teen’s full health record.

How to get proxy access to a child or teen account

You will need your own MyChart account to gain proxy access. If you do not have a MultiCare MyChart account, you can complete your sign-up online or a staff member can help you sign up in the clinic.

  • Online: Complete and submit the Request to Access a Minor’s Record form in MyChart.
    • You will be granted full access to a child’s record and limited access to a teen’s record.
    • A teen patient can choose to grant full access to a parent/guardian in MyChart Sharing Hub if they are comfortable with that person having access to sensitive information.
  • In person: Sign the consent form in the clinic, and then your account will be connected to your child’s medical record or your teen’s MyChart account.
  • You may also gain proxy access by printing the MyChart proxy access release of information request form (PDF) and sending the completed form to:
    • Email: [email protected]
    • Fax: 253-333-2419 (monitored Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm)
    • Mail:

How a teen can give full proxy access to a parent/guardian

The parent/legal guardian of a teen is automatically given limited access when the teen turns 13 in Washington and 14 in Idaho.

It is completely the teen’s decision if they want to grant full proxy access to a parent/legal guardian. Full access includes the ability to see all features, including sensitive visits (e.g., reproductive health, behavioral health), test results, medications, appointment scheduling and messaging. Teens may change full access to limited access at any time by visiting Friends and Family Access in their MyChart account.

To invite a parent/legal guardian to have full access to your MyChart record:

  • Log in to MyChart
  • Select Menu
  • Scroll to the Sharing section and select Sharing Hub
  • Select Family member, close friend or caretaker
  • Select Manage ongoing access to your MyChart account
  • In the Who can see my record? section, find the proxy who has limited access and select Change Access
  • Select Full access to parent/legal guardian, then Accept the change

Proxy access can be changed back to limited access at any time by the teen:

  • Log in to MyChart
  • Select Menu
  • Scroll to the Sharing section and select Sharing Hub
  • Scroll to the bottom of the page, then select Manage friends and family access
  • In the Who can see my record? section, find the proxy who has full access and select Change Access
  • Select Limited access to parent/legal guardian, then Accept the change

How to get proxy access to an adult’s account

Adult patients may invite another adult to be a proxy, which allows this person to have full access to their MyChart account, including clinical information, messaging and scheduling features. A common example of proxy access for adult patients is when older parents want their adult children to help manage their health care.

To invite someone to have access to your MyChart record:

  1. Log in to MyChart
  2. Select Menu
  3. Scroll to the Sharing section and select Sharing Hub
  4. Select Family member, close friend or caretaker
  5. Select Manage ongoing access to your MyChart account
  6. Select +Invite friends or family
  7. Complete the invitation fields, select Adult Accessing Adult – Full Access, agree to the terms and conditions, then Send invite
  8. Recipient will receive an invitation link in their email
  9. The link will take recipient to MyChart, where they must confirm patient’s date of birth and accept invitation

Proxy access can be stopped at any time by the proxy or the patient:

  1. Log in to MyChart
  2. Select Menu
  3. Scroll to the Sharing section and select Sharing Hub
  4. Scroll to the bottom of the page, then select Manage friends and family access
  5. Under Who Can See My Record?, select Revoke for the person you want to remove as proxy
