Targeted treatment for advanced prostate cancer

Radioligand treatment combines innovation and precision to improve quality of life and delay disease progression

Radioligand therapy — a new, innovative radiation treatment — is now offered at MultiCare Cancer Institute for individuals with advanced prostate cancer. Unlike conventional radiation treatments, radioligand therapy uses specialized molecules called radioligands that deliver radiation directly to prostate cancer cells, reducing exposure to surrounding healthy tissues.

How it works

Radioligand treatment combines a cancer-targeting compound with a radioactive isotope. The compound locates prostate cancer cells by detecting prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA), a protein that is found on most prostate cancer cells. When the compound binds to these cells, it delivers targeted radiation to destroy them.

Who it’s for

This targeted therapy is an option for those with PSMA-positive metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) that is no longer responding to hormone therapy.

Benefits of radioligand treatment

  • Precision targeting of cancer cells
  • Fewer side effects compared to traditional treatments
  • Improved quality of life
  • Delayed cancer progression
