Self-Insured Workers Compensation Instructions

This page includes care instructions for employees of self-insured businesses. If your employer is self-insured, the company you work for must cover the costs of an on-the-job injury or occupational disease. L&I regulates self-insurance programs. Employees of self-insured businesses have the same rights and responsibilities as other workers in Washington state.

  • Be sure that your employer is aware of the injury and that any paperwork the employer needs is completed.
  • Your claim will not be started until additional paperwork has been completed with your employer and/or the self-insured carrier (i.e. . Sedgwick, Broadspire, Gallagher Basset).
  • Keep the paperwork provided to you today. You may need to provide this to your employer and/or their worker’s compensation carrier.
  • Your employer’s insurance carrier (ex. Sedgwick CMS) will provide you with additional information regarding your claim (if allowed) and they will provide you with your assigned claim number.
  • Review the Worker’s Compensation Benefits Self-Insured pamphlet. It outlines the process and provides important information about your care.
  • If additional medical treatment is needed be sure to tell your healthcare providers that a work injury claim has been filed and give them your assigned claim number.
  • Should your Washington State L&I worker’s compensation claim be denied or rejected you will be financially responsible for any future services or forms not covered/excluded from any private insurance in which you are enrolled, to include any copay or cost shares. If you do not have any private insurance, you will be responsible for the billed amount.
