Laboratory Services Billing

MultiCare Laboratory Services has dedicated, local billing staff to facilitate accurate and timely billing for services. You or your insurance company will receive a bill from MultiCare Health System – Tacoma General Hospital for these laboratory services.

For questions regarding Laboratories Northwest billing and how to pay your bill or if you have insurance payer updates, call 253-403-1038, Monday – Friday from 6am-4pm.

If you need assistance or would like to set up a payment plan, eligible patients can follow payment plan instructions in MyChart or call 800-919-1936.

For most services, clients (physicians) are billed monthly with an itemized invoice that includes patient name, date of service, test performed and the test fee. Additional information can be included, if desired. Invoices are due upon receipt.

Some physicians request we bill commercial insurance directly; in these cases, we will bill a patient’s insurance directly. MultiCare is a hospital-based laboratory. To find out if MultiCare Laboratory Services is in-network with your insurance, you can provide tax ID 911352172 and NPI number 1366556227 to your insurance company for verification.

MultiCare will bill self-pay or non-insured patients directly. Expect a bill two to three weeks after services are completed. Please ask about our self-pay discount.

MultiCare bills Medicare and Medicaid. For Medicare patients, a Medicare Secondary Payer Questionnaire is required. For certain testing, a Medicare Advance Beneficiary Notice of Noncoverage, or “ABN”, may need to be completed before specimens are collected as Medicare may or may not cover certain testing.

MultiCare partners with UW Medicine lab and other testing laboratories for specialized testing. UW Medicine lab and other testing laboratories will bill patients directly for the testing they perform.

MultiCare has partnered with two private practices to provide pathology services. When pathology services are provided, two bills are issued: one from Sonic Healthcare or Incyte Pathology (for physician services), and one from MultiCare Health System (for the technical preparation of the specimens for pathologist review).
