Belonging & Growth
MultiCare is on an intentional journey to build and sustain a culture of belonging for our patients, communities and employees — an environment where all people feel heard, valued, respected and welcome for who they are. We recognize that each person we interact with brings their own talents, beliefs and backgrounds, and as an organization we’re committed to ensuring you can express those aspects of yourself free from racism, injustice, discrimination or violence.
In support of these beliefs, MultiCare is continuously integrating belonging and equity principles into the fabric of our organization and every aspect of the employee experience. This work is critical as we continue to expand our services and develop our workforce to meet the needs of our communities.
Through a variety of activities and new initiatives in 2024, we sought to empower our teams and cultivate the next generation of health care professionals:
- Our employee-led belonging resource groups foster connection and community among MultiCare team members.
- The Harmony Hill retreat supports the healing and resilience of our nurses.
- The MultiCare Sterile Processing Technician Academy, the first of its kind in the state, addresses a significant workforce gap so we can continue to deliver the care our patients need.
- Our new physician training space in Tacoma provides medical residents and fellows a dedicated place to learn and practice clinical skills, preparing them to serve our communities.
- MultiCare’s partnership with two local universities will improve access to care and address provider shortages in Pierce County through the delivery of high-quality, culturally appropriate outpatient services.
Belonging resource groups nurture connection, community
MultiCare launched belonging resource groups (BRGs) in 2024 to create opportunities for employees to build relationships with one another, participate in networking and pursue professional development. Hear more about the groups in the video below.
MultiCare opens state-of-the-art physician training space in Tacoma
Through a combination clinical and training space, Tacoma Family Medicine and OB Access clinics can respond to increased patient needs and provide a state-of-the-art learning environment for three graduate medical education programs.
MultiCare teams up with PLU, WSU to grow access & expand education
The Partnership for Health Innovation between MultiCare, Pacific Lutheran University (PLU) and the Washington State University (WSU) College of Medicine, launched in 2024, will prepare students to become local health care leaders and improve health outcomes in underserved Central Pierce County communities.
Investing in nurse well-being
Being a frontline caregiver comes with many rewards, yet the demands of delivering this kind of care day in and day out can be high, sometimes leading to burnout. MultiCare’s partnership with the Harmony Hill Renewal Retreat program provides nurses with an opportunity to recharge and reconnect with their passion for service in a safe, nurturing environment. Since 2021, 242 nurses across MultiCare have attended a retreat.
First-of-its-kind MultiCare academy expands health care workforce
Sterile processing technicians are critical to the success of every surgery — these professionals clean, sterilize and prepare each medical instrument and piece of equipment used in clinical procedures. In 2024, we celebrated the graduation of the inaugural class of the MultiCare Sterile Processing Academy — the first program of its kind in Washington state.
