MultiCare Health System is a not-for-profit health care organization that’s been caring for communities in Washington state since the founding of Tacoma’s first hospital in 1882. Since then, we’ve grown into the largest community-based, locally governed health system in the state of Washington, with more than 25,000 employees, providers and volunteers.

The 2024 chapter of MultiCare’s story was defined by transformation. MultiCare’s RN Transition to Practice Program announces its accreditation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center Practice Transition Accreditation Program, allowing newly graduated nurses to gain skills and confidence during their first year on the job.
MultiCare Tacoma General Hospital donates six iSTAT mobile laboratory devices to the Tacoma Fire Department. The devices allow emergency personnel to more rapidly diagnose and evaluate life-threatening diseases, providing MultiCare emergency physicians with a better understanding of a patient’s condition upon arrival at the hospital.
MultiCare, Pacific Lutheran University (PLU) and the Washington State University (WSU) Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine announce the Partnership for Health Innovation, which will prepare students to become health care leaders and improve health outcomes in Pierce County. The partnership will include construction of the MultiCare Medical Center at PLU and training opportunities for WSU medical students in Central Pierce County.
MultiCare is the first health system in the Pacific Northwest to use the new da Vinci 5 surgical robot. The technology allows surgeons more control and precision and provides patients with faster recovery times and shorter hospital stays after general, gynecologic, colorectal, urologic, thoracic, and head and neck surgeries.
MultiCare Deaconess Hospital, MultiCare Capital Medical Center and MultiCare Covington Medical Center earn an “A” safety grade from The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit that sets standards for excellence in patient care.
Pulse Heart Institute Cardiology Services in Olympia expands its eight-room clinic to 24 rooms and increases its number of cardiology providers to eight, improving access for patients seeking specialized care.
MultiCare breaks ground on two new neighborhood emergency departments in Bremerton and Lynnwood. Projected to open in 2025, both facilities will operate 24/7 and include on-site radiology services.
MultiCare opens our first Indigo Urgent Care and Occupational Medicine clinics in the Yakima region, providing critical access to the community.
Mary Bridge Children’s partners with the USDA Summer Food Service program to provide free summer meals for kids. In 2024, Mary Bridge Children’s serves 1,458 meals to children in the community.
MultiCare Indigo Urgent care breaks ground on a second North Idaho location in Hayden; three new Indigo locations, including the facility in Yakima, open their doors in 2024.
More than 4,800 Yakima community members attend Fiesta de Salud, a free community health fair hosted by MultiCare Yakima Memorial Hospital. Of those who attend the fair, 1,730 receive health screenings, 60 undergo vision evaluations and 50 get vaccinations. Yakima Memorial also distributes more than 725 backpacks full of school supplies.
MultiCare receives a $1.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) to establish a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner training program. It will ensure emergency department nurses can conduct trauma-informed and culturally responsive forensic exams for survivors.
The MultiCare Inland Northwest Foundation receives a $6 million grant from the Washington State Department of Commerce to develop a 24-bed inpatient behavioral health unit at MultiCare Deaconess Hospital in Spokane. In 2023, suicidal ideation was the eighth most common diagnosis at the Deaconess emergency department.
Through its Get with the Guidelines program, the American Heart Association recognizes seven MultiCare hospitals in the Puget Sound, Inland Northwest and Yakima regions for our commitment to providing high-quality stroke care.
Nominated by peers, more than 60 MultiCare doctors in the Puget Sound are named to Seattle magazine’s 24th annual Top Doctors list.
Damage from Hurricane Helene forces a crucial supplier of IV and irrigation fluids to close, leading to a severe nationwide shortage of these products. Over the following months, MultiCare successfully weathers this shortage, discovering ways to further streamline IV fluid use to become better stewards of our resources.
The Tacoma location of Pediatrix Cardiology of Puget Sound becomes Mary Bridge Children’s Cardiology. As part of this transition, Mary Bridge Children’s welcomes 18 new team members while helping to retain local access to pediatric heart care.
Construction begins on a new 10,000-square-foot neighborhood emergency department in Union Gap, which will bolster access to emergency care in the Yakima area.
The new Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital campus is close to the halfway point of construction. When complete, it will include an inpatient hospital tower and an ambulatory building offering specialty and urgent care and behavioral health crisis management services.
MultiCare and Overlake Medical Center join forces with a new affiliation agreement. As two not-for-profit, locally governed, secular health systems, we will operate in partnership to expand access to high-quality health care across the central and north Puget Sound regions.
Rachel Safran, MD, FACP, is named Investigator of the Year at MultiCare’s annual Research Day in recognition of her outstanding and groundbreaking contributions to medical research, particularly in HIV care.
MultiCare Capital Medical Center, MultiCare Covington Medical Center and MultiCare Valley Hospital earn an “A” safety grade from The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit watchdog that assigns grades to general hospitals across the country for patient care.
MultiCare Tacoma General Hospital and St. Joseph Medical Center shift to a continuous model of trauma care, with each facility offering 24/7 access 365 days a year. Prior to this expansion of services, Tacoma General and St. Joseph rotated trauma care daily. The new model will help meet the growing needs of the community as Pierce County’s population continues to rise.
Pulse Health Institute opens a new hybrid endovascular surgery suite at MultiCare Deaconess Hospital. This hybrid suite includes the most advanced imaging equipment in the region and incorporates the best features of an operating room and a cardiac catheterization room, allowing for flexibility and adaptability during procedures.
MultiCare gives $800,000 to more than 60 organizations across the Puget Sound, Inland Northwest and Yakima Valley regions through our Community Partnership Fund.

Over 770 MultiCare employees across 106 teams raise more than $150,000 for the American Heart Association (AHA) at the 2024 Heart & Stroke Walk. MultiCare is named the Hospital Cup winner by the AHA for our outstanding showing.
MultiCare opens a new opens a new 22,000-square-foot facility at the MultiCare Tacoma General Hospital campus to house Tacoma Family Medicine, OB Access clinics and three graduate medical education programs. The new facility will support access to care and provide a dedicated learning environment for residents and fellows.
LifeCenter Northwest, a federally designated nonprofit organ procurement organization, names MultiCare Good Samaritan Hospital’s Critical Care unit the 2024 LifeSaver Unit of the Year. This award is presented annually to one hospital unit in LifeCenter Northwest’s service area that demonstrates commitment to improved donation outcomes and culture. In 2024, 30 lives at Good Samaritan were saved through organ donation.
